Generally 3 years from the date you filed your original return. The IRS lists longer periods: 3 years from filing or 2 years from the date you paid the tax (whichever is later) if you file a claim for credit or refund, 7 years for a worthless securities or bad debt deduction, and 6 years if you left out income that is more than 25% of the gross income on your return.
For travel, gift and car expenses other than lodging, IRS Publication 463 says you do not need a receipt for expenses under $75. You still need to record the amount, date, place and business purpose. Lodging always needs a receipt.
A return filed before the due date is treated as filed on the due date, so the 3 years count from then (April 15 in most years, a weekday shift is possible). This calculator applies that rule.
Indefinitely. The IRS says to keep records indefinitely if you do not file a return, and also if you file a fraudulent return.
The IRS says you may choose any recordkeeping system suited to your business, including electronic accounting software or another electronic system. An electronic system must meet the same basic recordkeeping principles, and all requirements for paper books and records also apply to electronic records.
