Currency conversion FAQ

Which exchange rate should I use for an expense report?

Most expense reports convert each receipt at the exchange rate of the day you paid, so every line can be checked. Policies differ, so check your company's rule. For US tax, the IRS says: "Use the exchange rate prevailing when you receive, pay, or accrue the item."

What if the receipt date is a weekend or holiday?

The ECB publishes reference rates on TARGET working days at about 16:00 CET, so there is no rate for weekends and holidays. This tool uses the most recent earlier ECB rate and tells you which date it used.

Can I claim the card's foreign transaction fee?

Often it can be reimbursed if your policy allows it. Check your company's policy. The optional fee field adds a percentage on top of the converted total and shows it as a separate line.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

From the European Central Bank euro foreign exchange reference rates. Other currency pairs are cross rates computed via the euro. The ECB says its reference rates are for information purposes only, so they are not the rate your bank or card charged.

Does this tool send my receipts anywhere?

No. The rate table is loaded once and all conversion runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
